AIS Reports/ Interfaces

The Cognos suite of business intelligence tools are used to run reports from the AIS database. Each evening a snapshot of the database is copied to a reporting database, allowing Cognos’ tools to access the information without placing an additional load on the AIS system. Reporting is a process intensive activity, but through the use of Cognos, up-to-date student information is available without impacting AIS users.

How does the campus community get reports from AIS?

Reports from AIS are accessed through the reporting database using the Cognos reporting tools (Impromptu, UpFront, and PowerPlay).

There are two categories of users who access, analyze, and manipulate reporting data from AIS.

  • Report Writer - this user works with the actual AIS data in the reporting database to create reports and "cubes" that a web report user will manipulate to create custom reports. Most AIS Report Writers are analysts in the functional groups of Admissions, Enrollment (Registrar's Office), Student Financials (SBS), Financial Aid (or any campus unit who would like to have a staff person trained in this skill).
  • Web Report User - this user works with the AIS reports and "cubes" created by a Report Writer to customize views of the data and create new analyses. Web Report users are primarily those in the departments, colleges, and other units who need to work with AIS data for their particular area.
